Conference: Monetary Policy and Financial Intermediation: Learning from Heterogeneity and Microdata

Collegio Carlo Alberto, Turin, 16 – 17 October 2023

Banca d’Italia, Collegio Carlo Alberto and Norges Bank will host a joint conference on the role of financial intermediation, financing decisions, and the transmission and impact of monetary policy and shocks throughout the economy. The meeting will bring together economists from academia and central banks focused on using microdata in empirical work and model estimation to understand how banking activities, capital markets, and balance-sheet choices by firms and households affect monetary policy decisions and consequences, and how they shape the way in which unexpected shocks or new trends affect the dynamics of the economy. Special attention will be paid to papers with relevance to current policy questions. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Evolution of financial intermediation, and implications for central banks
  • Interactions and tradeoffs between macroprudential, fiscal and monetary policies
  • Monetary policy, financial stability and inflation with large central banks balance sheets
  • Financial vulnerabilities in a high inflation/high interest rates environment
  • Deposit markets, financial stability and monetary policy transmission
  • Financial assets and inflation risk
  • Climate risks, financial stability, and monetary policy transmission
  • Financial intermediation and the transmission mechanism of inflationary shocks

Luc Laeven (European Central Bank), Jose-Luis Peydro (Imperial College London) and Neeltje van Horen (Bank of England) are confirmed keynote speakers for the event.  Papers for submission should be sent to monetarypolicy@carloalberto.org by June 27th, 2023. Authors of accepted papers will be notified by July 10th. A discussant will be assigned to each presenter.
