Principles for the issue of commemorative coins
Adopted by the Executive Board on 5 March 2026
Pursuant to Section 3-4(1) of the Central Bank Act, Norges Bank has the authority to issue commemorative coins.
To mark anniversaries within the Royal House of Norway and anniversaries linked to the Constitution of Norway that may be regarded as major national and/or historical events, Norges Bank issues jubilee and commemorative coins in precious metal, which are sold as collector’s coins. Such coins are issued only in rare cases.
The guiding principle for all issues is that, with the exception of the Royal House of Norway, issues concerning a person must relate to a deceased individual. Institutions being commemorated should, as a general rule, be at least 100 years old.
