Ole Bull was a nineteenth century Norwegian violinist and composer of international renown. He was a prominent figure in the post-1814 nation-building era, contributing to the shaping of a national identity in politics, art and culture. Bull inspired many other Norwegian composers and artists, among them Edvard Grieg, and founded and financed the first Norwegian theatre. Bull also took the initiative for a national academy of music.
