DNT, Norway’s largest recreational outdoor organisation, is a non-profit and politically independent organisation composed of local member organisations and trekking clubs from across the country. Today, DNT has more than 290 000 members of all ages. DNT’s primary objective is to encourage as many people as possible to experience the joys of simple outdoor life. Environmental conservation and the cultural values that promote the protection of the environment are central to the organisation’s activities.         

In his founding remarks in 1868, Thomas Heftye said: “Let us make it easy and inexpensive, so that as many as possible can witness the magnificence and beauty of our country”. Since then, these words have served as a guiding principle for DNT.
