Abstract:
"Immigrants' participation in the labour market" Inequalities in the stocks of human capital between immigrants and native workers may be one source of differences in their unemployment/employment patterns. In comparison to native workers', the immigrants return on investment in human capital may be more uncertain. For instance, in addition to facing the probability of return migration and an imperfect secondhand market for human capital, they face the probability of differential treatment in the skilled labour market. These factors may contribute to lower investment in human capital among immigrants and thereby weaken their bond to the labour market. We may also attribute differences in the patterns of unemployment/employment among immigrants, e.g. between Western and non-Western immigrants, to differences in their exposure to these factors.
