Norges Bank is issuing new 50-krone and 500-krone banknotes
On 18 October, the new 50-krone and 500-krone banknotes will be put into circulation.
The first two denominations in Norway’s new banknote series were launched in May 2017. Now it is time for the next two.
“The new 50-krone and 500-krone banknotes will be available from 18 October 2018. You may still use 50-krone and 500-krone banknotes from the previous series for one year from this date,” says Leif Veggum, Director of the Norges Bank Cashier’s Department.
The main motif on the new 50-krone note is taken from Utvær Lighthouse in Sogn og Fjordane. The rescue lifeboat RS 14 “Stavanger” appears on the front side of the 500-krone note.
The official launch of the two new denominations will take place at RS Noatun in Horten, the Norwegian Society for Sea Rescue's maritime safety and educational centre. Horten is also host city for the Norwegian Coastal Administration, which is responsible for lighthouses and seamarks along the entire Norwegian coastline.
Improved security is the main reason that Norges Bank is introducing a new banknote series. Like the 100-krone and 200-krone notes, the new 50-krone and 500-krone notes contain a number of advanced security features that the general public should familiarise themselves with.
“Besides the watermark and security thread, which are well known from earlier series, the new banknote series features a ring that appears to float when you tilt the note. Moreover, all denominations except for the 50-krone note, contain a running anchor chain that appears to run in and out when you tilt the note,” Veggum explains.
With the launch of the 50-krone and 500-krone banknotes, four of the five denominations in the new banknote series will have been put into circulation. The 1000-krone banknote is planned to be issued in 2019 Q4.
The new banknote series is designed by Norges Bank and is based on suggestions from Metric Design/Terje Tønnessen and Snøhetta Design. More information about the design of the new notes can be found here.
