Chapter 3 - A consumer price index for Norway (pdf, 716 kB), is written by Ola H. Grytten.

Grytten has constructed new consumer price indices for Norway 1516 - 1871. Most data have been collected from Professor Ingvar Wedervang's historical archive on prices and wages at the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration in Bergen.

Improved price data, a wider coverage of consumer goods and improved methodology represents a major step forward in validity and reliability for the CPI for this period. The new indices have been spliced with existing series from 1871 onwards.

Discrepancies between the CPI from Statistics Norway and the spliced index reported here are due to accumulated rounding differences.
