Holter describes the two main areas of research for this project which was undertaken in the mid and late 1990s. At first, the aim of the project was to improve a rather crude and incomplete consumer price index which had been used since 1978. Later the project aimed at collecting a broader set of historical monetary statistics which also included exchange rates, monetary aggregates and interest rates.

Chapter 2 also gives the historical background for the calculation of monetary statistics at Norges Bank.
