Transportation from the airport to the city centre
The most efficient way to get from the airport to the city centre is to take the airport express train. Trains leave Oslo Airport Gardermoen every 10 minutes. It takes approximately 20 minutes to the Oslo Central Station and the ticket fare is 160 NOK. Travel by Taxi would cost between 500 NOK and 650 NOK, depending on time and day. The First Hotel Millennium and the First Hotel Grims Grenka are located a short taxi ride or a ten minutes walk from the Central Station. The Taxi fare would be approximately 100 NOK, and you can pay with most major credit cards.
Sightseeing
Below you will find some suggestions for places to visit if you are planning on doing some sightseeing in Norway before or after the workshop.
Oslo
If you would like to spend a few extra days in Oslo, there are enough sights and attractions to keep you busy for a day or two. Some of the most popular museums are the historical Viking Ship museum, the Polar Ship museum and the Kon-tiki museum. All three museums are located at Bygdøy, a short boat trip from downtown Oslo. Another popular museum and vista point, is the Ski museum, which is located next to the Holmenkollen ski jump. Art lovers might find the Munch museum or the National Gallery interesting. The Vigeland Sculpture Park is another main attraction.
We also recommend a stroll along the Karl Johan Street, which will take you past the Parliament and all the way to the Royal Castle. In the area around Karl Johan you will find plenty of restaurants and night-clubs as well. Other areas with a good selection of restaurants and bars are Grünerløkka and Aker Brygge. You will find more details about Oslo, including maps, on the VisitOslo website.
Outside Oslo
If you wish to see some Norwegian landscapes you should consider a trip to our western fjords, which were elected the world’s most popular World Heritage site. Norway also offers the opportunity to see glaciers and mountainous landscapes. A popular round trip (one day or more) is the Norway in a Nutshell tour offered by Fjord Tours. For more inspiration we recommend that you take a look at the official travel guide to Norway.
Weather
The weather might be a bit on the chilly side in September. We suggest you bring a warm sweater, possibly a rain jacket, water resistant footwear and a pair of shorts (just in case the weather is nice…).
