Where can no longer valid notes and coins be redeemed?

Members of the public wishing to redeem withdrawn (no longer valid) notes and coins, i.e. no longer legal tender, are requested to go to their bank or Norges Bank in Oslo.

Business hours for redemption of notes and coins at Norges Bank are Monday to Friday between 10am and 2pm. The office is closed on Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and the Wednesday before Maundy Thursday.

If you are unable to come to Norges Bank, you can send your notes/coins through the post as an insured letter, with the following information enclosed:

  • Name, address and telephone number
  • Bank account number*
  • A photocopy of valid identification (passport driving licence, bank card with photograph) must be enclosed with amounts above NOK 10,000

Post offices will provide information about the rules and cost of sending money by post. Send the money to:

* If required, Norges Bank will make further enquiries according to provisions in the Money Laundering Act and will then determine whether the customer’s bank account can be credited for the amount in question. Persons outside Norway must provide their bank account’s IBAN and SWIFT code (BIC).
