Following the announcement, the notes and coins continue to be legal tender and may be used in the normal manner for one year. After that, Norges Bank is obliged to redeem the notes and coins for an additional ten years.
The general public is encouraged to contact their bank if they wish to exchange withdrawn notes and coins for legal tender during the 10-year period.
Eleven years (1 + 10) after the announcement of the withdrawal, Norges Bank is no longer obliged to redeem the withdrawn notes and coins.
Currently Norges Bank will only redeem banknotes in Series VI issued in the period 1977 – 2001 and 50-øre coins issued in the period 1996-2011. Banknotes in Series VI may be redeemed until 1 November 2012 while the 50-øre coin (1996-2011) may be redeemed until 1 May 2022.
Norges Bank exchanges notes and coins at face value. Some of the denominations may have collector’s value. Contact a coin dealer about this.
Older series of notes and coins may nevertheless be redeemed in special cases upon application.
