Finanstilsynet (Financial Supervisory Authority of Norway) oversees financial institutions. The authority’s registry contains a list of all financial institutions subject to oversight and is available on the Finanstilsynet website.
Since banks play a key role in credit provision and payment services, Norges Bank monitors banks’ solvency and liquidity particularly closely. In addition, only banks may accept retail deposits.
Norges Bank's semiannual Financial Stability report provides a broad review of the key risks for banks, particularly credit risk, market risk and liquidity risk. The situation in insurance companies and investment firms is also assessed on an ongoing basis. As many financial institutions are part of mixed financial groups, Norges Bank monitors developments in both individual financial undertakings and financial groups.
