NORGES BANK 1816-2016

Norges Bank’s Bicentenary Project

Norges Bank will celebrate its 200-year anniversary in 2016. An extensive research project has been initiated with the aim of publishing several books before the celebration in 2016. A project steering group has been established.

The plan is to implement the project in two phases (2008-2010 and 2011-2015). The first phase will be used to establish contact with relevant research environments and to initiate research projects that will be of use when writing the books. The aim is to have three books completed at the beginning of 2016. These books will cover different aspects of Norges Bank’s activities during the past 200 years.  The project will also highlight Norges Bank’s role in society in a historical perspective. The working titles of the three books are as follows:

1. The History of Norges Bank 1816-2016
2. The Monetary History of Norway 1816-2016
3. What is a useful central bank? Evolution over two centuries

Our aim is that the calibre of the books satisfies the requirements of an internationally recognised academic publisher. The first two books will be published in both Norwegian and English.  The third book will only be published in English. The idea is that such a project, through extensive interaction with the international academic environment, will contribute to enhancing the quality of the first two books.

As part of the bicentenary project Norges Bank sponsor several international conferences which have a strong focus on topics of interest for the book projects. Norges Bank benefits in this area from the close collaboration with many international academic experts in central bank history and monetary history and with institutions such as the Graduate Institute in Geneva and CEPR in London. Norges Bank's Bicentenary Project has also co-sponsored the Tenth Summer School in Finance, Institutions and History at University Ca' Foscari in Venice.
